Fall is officially here! This time of year is always my favorite at the start...and then December rolls around! In Illinois we are starting to experience temperature drops. The afternoons are very pleasant, but in the evenings and early mornings temperatures have been dipping into the forties and fifties. So we have been warming up on the couch with chunky throw blankets and big mugs of hot cocoa in our household! Earlier in the week I shared about it in my Instagram stories, and I could not have predicted the response that I got! It raised a lot of curiosity about my recipe. So I thought I would share it with you here!
The recipe that I use has been passed down to me from Mama 'Meadows' who makes the best hot cocoa and sugar cookies I've ever tasted (more on the cookies later). She experimented with a few different ingredients and measurements and came up with this hot cocoa mix when I was just a little girl...way before the Internet. And nowadays I enjoy making it with my own little girl. It's also an activity that you can get your children involved in because it is incredibly easy to make! Below I've listed what you will need.
The recipe calls for just 4 simple ingredients:
8 qts of Nonfat Dry Powdered Milk
1 lb Confectioners (Powdered) Sugar
16 oz Powder Coffeemate Coffee Creamer
2 lbs Nestles Chocolate Nesquick (I use 2 - 1.16lb containers)
I picked up all of these ingredients at the store last night for around $15.00 and whisked them together in a matter of minutes. You penny pinchers are probably thinking that's expensive, but it's really not considering how much the recipe yields. This recipe should yield enough to last you throughout the year. It really doesn't ever go bad. It also makes a good gift for friends and family members. I like to poor a little of the mix in a mason jar and top it with marshmallows and baking chips, sprinkles, or my favorite winter topping - crushed peppermint.
It's great for having on hand for when those hot cocoa cravings hit because it's ready in an instant! When you get a craving all you have to do is heat up some water or milk in a microwave safe mug, dissolve 3-5 tablespoons of your mix for taste, and add some toppings for a real treat! And that's all there is to it! My Rae Dunn mug runneth over!
